Every other year, the Texas Legislature has thousands of proposals for laws, and many of them stand to affect children's lives. Texans Care for Children works with dedicated elected officials to advance progress for the state's children and fight against proposals that could harm kids.
After each session, we write "recaps" of what the legislative session means for kids and share the behind-the-scenes story of developments like:
reforms to Child Protective Services and the state's juvenile justice system;
changes that eventually led to hundreds of thousands more children getting health insurance;
creation of a statewide council to improve planning and coordination in children's services
improvements in mental health services for kids;
new supports for children who have been removed from their parents' care;
improvements in the quality and availability of healthy foods for kids;
laws that make it easier for kids to get physical activity at school or in the community; and
defensive efforts to maintain services that keep children out of poverty.
